My Life With Creativity is an adult version of Show and Tell. It’s a portal into the countless ways creativity abounds in my life in minute and monumental ways. Creativity is everywhere. I plan to share a multitude of things like decorating, my writing, art and art techniques, organizing, perhaps explore the etymology of things I post about or talk about books and reference material about creativity, cards, handmade booklets, indoor and outdoor creative stuff, and more!
Growing up and growing older I had no clue what I wanted to “be”. I marveled at people who possessed a crystal clear vision of their passion: teacher, fireman, wife and baby maker, rocket scientist, professional oboist, lion trainer. I waffled at what I did for a living yet despite that did ok for myself, and better than ok, depending what yardstick you use to measure. I went to college, did a secretarial stint in an engineering department, converted to being an engineering technician, eventually morphed into becoming a senior manufacturing engineer, and for 25 years owned and ran a custom car parts business together with hubby, Steve.
Not a particularly creative life you’re no doubt thinking, yet without giving it thought or credence I was, all along, actually leading a double life – one brimming with variegated expressions of creativity. I baked, cooked, embroidered, sewed curtains and clothes – even my own wedding gown, crocheted, wove baskets, designed patterns and made stained glass art, made greeting cards, drew cartoon figures, did landscaping, interior decorated our homes, redecorated, used feathers and twigs in vases in lieu of flowers, made wreaths out of tree limbs, wrote poetry, haikus, newspaper articles, a memoir and essays and redecorated some more.
It was and continues to be how I fill my personal time and is just so danged fun! As a youngster I even envisioned this Polish and Hungarian, freckled faced, auburn-haired girl who looked Irish to be an American Plains Indian. I think that was particularly inventive!
Some of what I did creatively in my formative years I owe to having been a good, little Brownie and Girl Scout, passing the rigors of badge earning and filling my sash with hand sewn on, round, colorful badges. From there I picked up a slew of creative techniques and it solidified my love for manual doing. Other endeavors came from taking Home-Economics in junior high, others still from ideas sparked by articles in magazines. All along there was something deliciously exhilarating and satisfying about using my hands to create the possibilities my eyes envisioned.
Later in life I became a self-taught artist and still later I at last had the epiphany that creative doing was what ultimately made me most happy, satiated, and was what I always really wanted to “be”. Creativity is a whole separate language that helps to express and explain what it is I’m all about. I invite you to visit my art website, Carol A. Watson Art.
Too often I hear people say they don’t have a creative bone in their body. It makes me sad. I believe we’re all creative in some way, it’s just a matter of listening to what makes your heart sing, doing what it takes to claim it for your own and thereby enriching your life. This blog, then, will not only fill a personal need I have to share, if I’m lucky, it just might inspire you to see new possibilities and spark ideas for even more creativity in your own life. Hopefully it will spur discoveries about what it is that makes your heart sing and makes you – you. I hope you follow along and together we’ll see what unfolds.
